Oakland is home to one of the busiest container ports in northern California, making the city an important trade center and transportation hub with a vibrant and active waterfront. Founded in 1852, Oakland has a deep history going back to the Huchiun tribe—the earliest known inhabitants who lived here for thousands of years. Oakland has a Mediterranean climate and a beautiful mix of modern and historic neighborhoods and architecture. It is one of the most ethnically integrated cities in the United States, with a thriving visual and performing arts scene.
