The History of Hanna Brophy

Established in 1943, Hanna, Brophy, MacLean, McAleer & Jensen, LLP (“Hanna Brophy”) first opened its doors in San Francisco, California in the Merchant Exchange Building. From the beginning, Hanna Brophy has dedicated its practice to representing employers. This commitment and focus continues today by industry-leading attorneys who make up Hanna Brophy.

The Hanna Brophy reputation was established early on by its founding attorneys. Warren Hanna authored the original and most recognized workers’ compensation treatise, The California Law of Employee Injuries and Workers’ Compensation; this treatise is commonly cited as "Hanna." Don Brophy began the process of expanding our statewide reputation by flying to different locations in the State and representing employers in cities such as Fresno, Sacramento, and Bakersfield. Don Brophy's flight path mapped the direction and future progression of the Firm. Most of his previous flight stops have since become permanent Hanna Brophy offices.

At the conclusion of World War II, some of our country’s brightest litigators joined Hanna Brophy after returning from the war. Among them were Bob MacLean (U.S. Navy), Edward McAleer (U.S. Marines), and Herbert Jensen (U.S. Air force). The addition of these attorneys enabled the Firm’s founders to continue as the premiere workers’ compensation defense firm throughout northern California.

In 1991, Hanna Brophy added its first southern California location by setting up an office in San Bernardino (which is now our Riverside office).  Since that time, Hanna Brophy has expanded its southern California presence significantly by establishing offices in Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego.

Hanna Brophy has always represented a wide variety of clients, including some of the largest manufacturers, retailers, farming businesses, and their insurers.  With excellent attorneys in every office, Hanna Brophy continues to build upon its illustrious past by providing exemplary legal representation on behalf of its clients.
